Generation 3 Top Qs:
What’s the difference between the Oura Ring Generation 2 and Generation 3?
The Generation 2 and Generation 3 Oura Rings have the exact same exterior look and feel—however, Gen3 comes packed with an entirely new set of advanced interior technology, including an evolved LED and temperature sensor configuration, as well as 32x the memory capacity of Gen2. To keep it simple, Gen3 comes in a single style: Heritage. We decided to prioritize the clean and minimal Heritage design, which has stood the test of time as our most popular style and represents the origin of our brand.
The upgraded technology built into Gen3 is what unlocks cutting-edge features such as daytime and workout heart rate, period prediction, advanced sleep tracking, and an entirely new library of science-backed videos and guided wellness sessions, among so much more. To learn more about the difference between Generations 2 and 3, as well as what Gen3 can enable in the future, check out this article.
Keep in mind that the Generation 3 Oura Ring comes coupled with an Oura Membership, which is required to take full advantage of our suite of features being released onto the Gen3 ring hardware. Oura Membership only applies to the Gen3 ring. You do not need to purchase an Oura Membership to continue using a Gen2 ring, nor is it possible to add the benefits of Oura Membership onto a Gen2 ring. To learn more about Oura Membership and what it entails, please visit us here.
Why does Generation 3 come with a Membership fee now? Can I use Generation 3 without the Membership fee?
To learn more about all things Oura Membership, please visit our Oura Membership FAQs. In short, Generation 3 comes coupled with a monthly membership to deliver on the requests of our community and channel optimal value into their overall experience with us by routinely launching innovative features, relevant content, personalized avenues, and more. Membership also helps us invest back into our clinical research on the most pressing health problems, helping us to continue capitalizing on the full potential of our product technology. Please note that Oura Membership only applies to the Oura Ring Generation 3. You do not need to purchase an Oura Membership to continue using a Generation 2 ring, nor is it possible to add the benefits of Oura Membership onto a Generation 2 ring.
While you won’t be able to retain the same Oura experience without a membership, we’re giving all our new community members a 6-month free trial that’ll start when they pair their ring and app for the first time.
Keep in mind that without an Oura Membership, you’ll only be able to see your three daily Oura Scores, ring battery, basic profile information, and app settings. All your contributors, tailored insights, features, in-app content, among other dimensions of your Oura app and experience will be locked.
If you’re an existing Oura Ring member and took advantage of your lifetime eligibility offer, the monthly cost of your membership does not apply in your circumstance.
Will Generation 2 continue to be supported by Oura Ring’s support team and undergo routine software and firmware updates?
If you’re currently a Generation 2 Oura Ring Member and decide to stick with your Gen2 ring without upgrading to Gen3, we’ll continue to support your product with routine software and firmware updates.
You’ll still have access to the same features currently available on your Gen2 ring—however, because there are extensive technological differences between Gen2 and Gen3, as we continue to release new features, many of them may not be available on Gen2 due to limitations in its interior hardware (i.e., sensors, memory, etc.). Keep in mind, the following newly announced features listed in our article here are limited to Gen3 only due to such limitations:
• Daytime Heart Rate
• Live Heart Rate
• Restorative Time
• Period Prediction
• Workout Heart Rate
• Advanced Sleep Staging Algorithm
• Blood Oxygen Measurement SpO2
• Guided Audio Sessions, Educational Videos, and Slideshows
Following the release of Gen3, only unguided sessions will be available as part of Oura’s Moment feature in Gen2 rings. This is because all existing and emerging guided audio offerings from Oura are being merged into the newest expansion of the Oura app, the Explore tab. The Explore tab will house all guided audio, educational videos, and slideshows made possible with our Gen3 technology and Oura Membership that comes coupled with.

This will vary depending on the lifespan of your ring, as well as how often you use daytime or live features such as taking a Moment or a nap, listening to a Sleep Sound, etc. To get the most out of your battery’s lifespan and enhance its longevity, check out our tips and best practices.
Is the Oura Ring waterproof?
The Oura Ring is water-resistant up to 100 meters (~330 feet).
Oura’s water resistance grade applies to normal usage. Meaning, you can wear it while partaking in recreational diving (e.g. snorkeling). However, we don’t recommend using your ring while scuba diving or keeping it submerged underwater for over 12 hours.
Can Oura detect COVID-19?
Oura is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent particular diseases or conditions.
However, several members of our Oura community have shared their stories with us, demonstrating how they’ve used their Oura Ring to spot COVID-19 symptoms ahead of time and appropriately monitor their condition after being diagnosed.
In Oura’s large-scale study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), TemPredict, final conclusions revealed that Oura’s continuous temperature monitoring could make it an effective tool for fever monitoring and early illness detection. In UCSF’s analysis of 50 COVID-19 cases, Oura Ring temperature data could spot pre-symptomatic signs of a fever in 76% of people by flagging when an individual was deviating from their normal temperature patterns. You can learn more about the study here, and how you can begin to use Oura to help you monitor future emerging sickness here.
Does Oura account for time zone changes?
Yes, your Oura Ring will synchronize to your device’s local time once your ring and Oura app connect over Bluetooth in the new time zone you’ve entered.
You’ll need to ensure that (1) Bluetooth is enabled on your device, (2) proper connection between your ring and app is established, and (3) your device’s OS is fully up to date for time zone changes to be reflected. Check out this article to learn more, or if you have remaining questions.
What is restricted mode?
Restricted mode protects your information in case an unwanted party gets ahold of your Oura Ring and attempts to pair it with their device.
If the Oura app notifies you it’s in Restricted Mode, you'll need to reset your ring to its factory settings in order to continue using it.
Restricted mode can also be activated if you attempt to pair your ring to a new device without performing a factory reset on it first. Please avoid pairing your ring to more than one device at a time and if you’d like to switch devices, be sure to perform a factory reset first.
What is the crown icon?
Any day your Sleep, Readiness, or Activity Scores meet or exceed 85, it’ll be marked with a crown in your Oura calendar. If you’re stellar enough to have more than one of your scores reach at or above 85 on a given day, it’ll be reflected in the number of filled ellipses below each crown icon. To access your Oura calendar, tap ‘Today’ at the top of your Home tab.
If you’re curious to learn more about your scores, their contributors, and how you can approach receiving more crowns, please check out this section of articles.
Can I wear my Oura Ring only at night?
Yes. However, you may miss out on useful activity data that loop into your other scores, and your Oura experience may seem incomplete as a result.
The more you wear your Oura Ring, the more Oura will be able to capture a holistic picture of you and reflect it back through meaningful data and insights. Because Oura is tailored to you, we recommend to all Oura Members they wear their rings 24/7 for optimal accuracy and personalization.
In the Oura Ring Generation 3, your ring and app come equipped with a full stack of new features you’ll be able to take advantage of by wearing your ring 24/7. This includes 24-hour heart rate tracking via Daytime Heart Rate, Period Prediction, an entire new tab in the Oura app where you can listen to guided meditations, watch science-backed educational videos, receive personalized tips on how to build healthier habits based on your body signals, and more.
Can I wear my Oura Ring while working out?
Yes, you can wear your Oura Ring throughout all your workouts and movement routines. Oura can even automatically track over 40 unique activity types, such as HIIT, yoga, and gardening—without you having to lift a finger.
However, we don't recommend wearing your Oura Ring while lifting heavy weights, as it may get scratched.
Does Oura have a smart alarm?
The Oura Ring does not have a smart alarm feature, nor does it use sounds, lights, vibrations, or other alert functions.
However, Oura can share the following notifications with you, if you’d like.
• Reminder to charge your rind when your battery is low
• Reminder to move when you’ve been inactive for 50 minutes
• Reminder to start winding down 2 hours before your ideal bedtime window, based on your best night’s sleep
• Status of your activity progress throughout each day
• New insight availability, based on your personalized trends and achievements across sleep, recovery, and activity
You can set these up by navigating to the hamburger menu in the upper left-hand corner of your Home tab > tap ‘Settings’ > ‘Notifications’ > toggle on or off those which apply.
How can I find a lost ring?
If you’ve lost your ring and it has battery remaining, you can use the app Find My Bluetooth Device in an attempt to track it down. Otherwise, you can reach out to our team here so we can assist you with best next steps.
What should I do if I want to stop wearing my ring for a bit?
If you plan on taking a break from wearing your Oura Ring for more than 2 weeks, we recommend putting it into power saving mode to prevent any potential battery deterioration.
To enable power saving mode, follow the steps we’ve outlined here. Keep in mind that storing your Oura Ring for an extended period of time (2+ weeks) without enabling power saving mode first may affect the longevity of your battery and its performance. As a consumable component of our product, batteries are not covered under Oura’s Limited Warranty of 1-2 years—depending on your geographic location and ring model.
How do I know which Oura Ring Generation I have?
If you're unsure of which Oura Ring Generation you currently own, you can tap the battery icon in the upper right-hand corner of your Home tab and swipe left. You'll find it listed beneath 'Model and size,' directly below the image of your ring.
If you have more than one Oura Ring currently on-hand (e.g., in the case you're upgrading to a new generation or model), you can follow the steps below to help identify which ring is which. This can be helpful if you're purchased, for example, the same model and finish for both Gen2 and Gen3.

2. Once you’ve established a charging connection, tap the battery icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Home tab and swipe left. You'll find its generation listed beneath 'Model and size,' directly below the image of your ring.
3. Repeat for your other ring.
