Brain Health Check-in
Brain Health Check-In is a research study that combines brief in-app cognitive assessments with Oura Ring data to help explore how physiology and daily habits may relate to cognitive performance.
As part of the study, you’ll receive feedback on your performance in the cognitive assessments and can learn more about cognition and brain-healthy habits through educational materials in the app.
These tests are offered through Oura’s partnership with Cambridge Cognition, a neuroscience technology company specializing in scientifically validated digital and voice based cognitive measurement.
Am I eligible to participate in the Brain Health Check-in?
You may be eligible to participate in Brain Health Check-In if you:
- are at least 18 years old
- are not currently pregnant
- have at least 3 months of historical Oura data
In the Oura App, you also must opt in to participate in research studies. To do so:
- Tap the
menu in the upper-left corner of Today tab
- Tap Settings
- Scroll to "Data Sharing" and tap Research
- Toggle "Research study matching" on
If you are eligible, you may receive an invitation in the Oura App to participate.
What happens when I enroll in the study?
Participation in Brain Health Check-In is completely voluntary.
In order to participate, you must complete an informed consent form in the Oura App.
You’ll then answer questions about your demographic, health, and lifestyle factors, along with a short questionnaire about perceived changes in your cognitive functioning.
After that, you’ll be prompted to complete a brief digital cognitive assessment that you can repeat anytime during the study. There’s also an option to complete a more in-depth cognitive assessment that can also be repeated during the study.
Please note that Brain Health Check-In is a research study. It is not a diagnostic feature, or intended to prevent, detect, treat, or monitor any medical condition. Always consult your healthcare professional before making changes concerning your health.
What are the cognitive tests that are offered in the study?
Brain Health Check-in is offering two different tests:
- CANTAB One is a digit symbol substitution test (DSST) that takes about two minutes to complete. It measures how quickly and accurately you can match symbols to numbers, which taps into key cognitive operations like attention, visual recognition, processing speed, and fine motor skills
- CANTAB Insight is an optional, in-depth assessment that takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. It provides a more comprehensive snapshot of your specific brain functions across multiple domains, including working memory, executive functions, processing speed, attention, and episodic memory
You can complete tasks at your own pace, repeat tests freely at any time, and try different tasks. You can try repeating the tests under different conditions to better understand what factors might affect your performance. Please note that the tests are for research and educational purposes only.
How are my cognitive test results scored?
Your results are benchmarked against data from people with a similar age, sex, and educational background. Based on this normative benchmarking, your score will fall into a "Below average," "Average," or "Above average" category.
- CANTAB One provides a single overall score
- CANTAB Insight provides scores across more detailed metrics, including working memory, executive function, processing speed, attention, and episodic memory
Performance on these tasks can be shaped by many factors, including:
- Short-term influences: stress, poor sleep, illness
- Longer-term influences: pregnancy, menopause, pre-existing health conditions, medication
What if I want to withdraw from the study?
Participation in the Brain Health Check-in is completely voluntary. You can withdraw from the study at any time. To do so:
- Tap the
menu in the upper-left corner of Today tab
- Select Oura Labs
- Under "Currently testing", find Brain Health Check-In
- Tap on Show details, then tap Withdraw from study
Data collected before withdrawal will remain part of the study dataset, as outlined in the consent form. No further action is needed after you withdraw.
Blood Pressure Profile Study
The Blood Pressure Profile study analyzes several factors to estimate whether you show signs of hypertension.
Blood Pressure Profile is available in English only to members based in the US. Members must use Oura App version 7.14.0 or later on their device to enroll in the study.
Am I eligible to participate in the Blood Pressure Profile Study?
To participate in Blood Pressure Profile, you must:
- Be at least 22 years of age
- Not have a cardiac implant
- Not be currently pregnant
- Not have been pregnant in the last 12 weeks
What happens when I enroll in the study?
Participation in the Blood Pressure Profile Study is completely voluntary.
In order to participate in the study, you have to sign an informed consent form. A copy of the consent form will be sent to the email address linked to your Oura account.
As part of the study, you’ll answer a series of questions about your lifestyle and medical history. You will then receive an estimate of whether your data indicate signs of strong, moderate, or no current signs of hypertension, based on your answers and ring metrics.
These metrics include heart rate, HRV, sleep, activity, and the shape of your pulse waves.
Every 12 weeks, you will have the opportunity to answer follow-up questions and receive an updated estimate.
Please note that Blood Pressure Profile Study is a research study to help Oura develop a software feature that is intended to help spot hidden hypertension risks. It is not a diagnostic feature, or intended to prevent, detect, treat, or monitor illness. Always consult your healthcare professional before making changes concerning your health.
In addition, the Blood Pressure Profile Study does not provide blood pressure measurements.
I accidentally entered an incorrect response in the initial questionnaire. Can I change the response?
Study participants cannot reset their responses once they complete the initial Blood Pressure Profile questionnaire.
Approximately 12 weeks after completing the first questionnaire, you will be prompted to revisit your questionnaire answers. At that time, you can update your responses.
I accidentally reported that I was diagnosed with hypertension in the initial questionnaire. Can I change the response?
If you have mistakenly reported a prior hypertension diagnosis during the questionnaire, this may be reverted at any time. To do so:
- Tap the
menu
- Select Oura Labs
- Under "Currently testing", find Blood Pressure Profile Study
- Tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner
- Scroll down to "Medical factors" and tap Diagnosed hypertension. You have the option to revert the diagnosis
Blood Pressure Profile Study assessments are not intended or enabled for individuals who have already been diagnosed with hypertension.
I received a hypertension diagnosis in the past. Is the study still for me?
The study is designed to help us build and improve methods for early detection of hypertension.
You may still enroll in the study if you have a prior diagnosis of hypertension. Blood Pressure Profile Study assessments are turned off once a diagnosis of hypertension is reported.
While the assessments aren’t available in this case, your participation still helps inform future tools that may benefit others.
In addition, you may still use the Blood Pressure Profile Study to log manual blood pressure cuff measurements and track them over time.
Do I need to take measurements with a blood pressure cuff as part of the study?
The Blood Pressure Profile Study doesn’t require any cuffs or visits to a doctor’s office, but you have the option to manually add cuff measurements and track them over time if you have a blood pressure cuff at home. Participants will not receive a blood pressure cuff as a part of the study.
To manually add cuff measurements:
- Tap the
menu
- Select Oura Labs
- Under "Currently testing", find Blood Pressure Profile Study
- Scroll down to where it says "Measure at home with a cuff"
- Tap on Add cuff measurement to manually log a blood pressure cuff measurement
Within the study, you may import manually logged blood pressure values from Apple Health or Health Connect by Android. Only measurements logged since the time of your enrollment in the study will be visible within the Oura App.
Manually added blood pressure cuff measurements do not affect your Blood Pressure Profile Study result.
What if I want to withdraw from the study?
Participation in the Blood Pressure Profile Study is completely voluntary. You can withdraw from the study at any time. To do so:
- Tap the
menu
- Select Oura Labs
- Under "Currently testing", find Blood Pressure Profile Study
- Tap on Show details, then tap Withdraw from study
Data collected before withdrawal will remain part of the study dataset, as outlined in the consent form. No further action is needed after you withdraw.
Will I be able to see the results of this study?
Study results may become publicly available on the official Oura website, The Pulse Blog, white papers, reports, or peer-reviewed publications in academic journals.
