Use Google Fit with Oura
Android users can link their Oura accounts to Google Fit to make every workout and activity count.
By integrating the Oura app with Google Fit, you’ll have a collection of all your workouts and healthy movement together in one place. Similarly, you’ll be able to view key metrics such as sleep duration and nightly resting heart rate recorded via your Oura Ring inside Google Fit. This can be especially meaningful when viewed alongside integrations from other third-party apps.
This article contains information on how to set up Oura's Google Fit integration, a breakdown of data shared between apps, and an explanation for why different wearables calculate calories differently.
Setting Up Google Fit
While setting up your account after first downloading the Oura app, you will be asked to enable Google Fit.
If you chose not to enable Google Fit during the initial setup process, the steps below will help you configure and start using Google Fit.
In the Oura App
1.) Tap the menu icon (☰) in the upper left-hand corner of the Home tab ().
2.) Tap ‘Settings’, then tap ‘Google Fit’.
3.) Enable the following parameters:
• Connect to Google Fit
• Import Workouts from Google Fit
• Moments to Google Fit
To confirm you have successfully integrated Google Fit, follow the steps below:
1.) Open Google Fit.
2.) Tap ‘Profile’, then tap the Settings icon in the upper right-hand corner.
3.) Tap ‘Manage connected apps’.
4.) Ensure Oura is listed as a connected app.
Keep in mind, the Oura App might not import data from Google Fit if both apps were not opened before midnight. This might happen if ‘Background App Refresh’ is disabled or if Lower Power Mode is enabled on your Android device.
To prevent this from happening in the future, be sure to open both Google Fit and the Oura app at least once during the day. Feel free to close them again at night after workouts or activities for the day have been completed.
Additional steps, such as manual syncing may be required when integrating third-party apps through Google Fit to the Oura.
Which Data Are Exported & Imported?
Oura’s Google Fit integration permits bi-directional data flow between the Oura app, Google Fit, and 3rd party apps connected to Google Fit. When you sync your Oura data, Google Fit updates will appear after you've completed an activity or workout.
With your permission, the Oura app will export and import the following data.
Exported From Oura to Google Fit
• Sleep Measurements (Bedtime, Wake Time, Sleep Duration, Nightly Resting Heart Rate)
• Moment Data (Presence and Rest Sessions)
*Oura exports Resting Heart Rate into the Heart Rate category in Google Fit.
Imported From Google Fit to Oura
• Workout (Activity Type, Start Time, Duration, Calories)
Things to Keep in Mind
• The Oura app will only sync workouts for the current day.
• If you wish to delete a workout, you must delete the workout in the app it was recorded in.
• If the imported workout includes calorie data, you can't manually edit the data in the Oura app. To edit the calorie info, use the app you used to track your workout.
• If calorie burn data from Google Fit is unavailable, you can manually adjust the workout intensity in the Oura app to get a better estimate.
Calories Calculated from Imported Workouts
When tracking activity, Oura only records your active calories. These calories include the calories you burn during exercise and not your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR is the number of calories required to keep your body functioning at rest, or, in this example, calories burned while you're asleep or resting.
Other fitness trackers and health apps will combine active calories and BMR. As a result, their calorie burn estimations may differ slightly from Oura's.
In the example below, a manually added activity in Oura would add 216 Cal to one's Total Daily Calorie Burn, while a workout tracked with a different device and imported into Oura would add 244 Cal to one's Daily Calorie Burn.
Here's an example for a moderate-intensity, 30-minute run for a 35-year old woman (126 lb/57kg, 5 ft 5 in/164 cm).
• Active Calories: 216 Cal
• Total Calorie Burn = 216 Cal
Other Health Apps
• Active Calories: 216 Cal
• Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): 28 Cal
• Total Calorie Burn = 244 Cal (216 + 28)
