Live Activity Tracking

Live Activity Tracking enables you to see real-time metrics directly in the Oura App during an activity. Available Live Activity measurements include pace and distance with GPS, and live heart rate with third-party heart rate monitors.

This feature is not available on Gen2 or older.

Live Activity Tracking is gradually rolling out starting May 28, 2026.

What Is Live Activity Tracking?

With Live Activity Tracking, you can start a dedicated workout recording within the Oura App and receive real-time information on certain metrics:

  • Live Pace and Distance: For supported outdoor activities only (like running, walking, hiking, and cycling), the Oura App uses your phone's GPS to display live pace and distance
  • Third-Party Live Heart Rate: You can connect a compatible external heart rate monitor to see your live heart rate and heart rate zones within the Oura App. This is available for most indoor and outdoor activities
  • Live Widget: Use the lock-screen widget for a quick glance at your stats while the app is backgrounded during an activity
  • Post-Activity Summary: Get a detailed summary of your activity that contributes to your daily Activity and Readiness Scores

Compatible Devices for Live Heart Rate

Compatible third-party heart rate monitors are those that expose the standard BLE Heart Rate Service. This includes most modern chest straps, armbands, and some watches or gym equipment that broadcast heart rate readings. On iOS, this also includes Apple ecosystem devices via HealthKit. At this time, Live Activity Tracking is not supported through the Apple Watch.

Live Activity Tracking has been tested to work with compatible third-party devices including but not limited to:

  • Garmin (e.g. HRM Dual chest straps)
  • Polar (e.g. H10 and Verity Sense)
  • Powerbeats Pro 2
  • AirPods Pro 3

Without a compatible device, you will not see live heart rate in the Oura App. Your Oura Ring does not stream live heart rate to your phone's screen during an activity. Without a third-party device, the Oura Ring will instead track your heart rate during the activity and show it in the summary afterward.

You can still track live pace and distance through the Oura App for certain outdoor activities without a third-party device, if GPS location services are enabled.

How to Use Live Activity Tracking

To record a Live Activity:

  1. Tap the "+" button in the Today tab of the Oura App

  2. Select Start live activity
  3. Choose your Activity type
  4. Choose a heart rate source:
    • Select Oura Ring under "Post-activity heart rate source" if you do not have an external heart rate monitor. You will get post-activity heart rate data from your ring, but no live, on-screen heart rate

    • Select a third-party heart rate device under "Live heart rate source" to pair and use a compatible external monitor for live, on-screen heart rate measurement

  5. To pair your third-party device (if applicable):
    • Ensure that the heart rate monitor is on, in pairing mode, and not currently connected to another app
    • The Oura App will search for nearby BLE Heart Rate Service devices. Tap your device when it appears and follow the on-screen instructions to connect
  6.  Start your activity
    • If you selected an outdoor activity such as run, walk, or cycling, ensure that your phone's GPS location services are enabled in order for the Oura App to track pace and distance
  7. During the activity, you will see elapsed time, live heart rate (if using a third-party heart rate monitor), zones, and pace/distance (for outdoor activities)
  8. Use the on-screen controls to Pause, Resume, or End the session
    • You can also use the lock screen widget to view your progress and control the activity recording

If you are wearing a third-party heart rate monitor during an exercise but not wearing your Oura Ring, the activity's steps will not be added to the daily step count in your Oura App. Additionally, calorie counts may be noticeably different for some users in these cases.

Troubleshooting Live Activity Tracking

My third-party heart rate device is not detected when trying to pair

  • Check BLE/Location: Ensure that Bluetooth and location services are enabled on your phone, and that the Oura App has permission to use Location (required for device search)
  • Check Compatibility: Ensure that your third-party device supports BLE Heart Rate Service, not older protocols like ANT+-only
  • Check Vendor App: Many watches or straps require you to manually enable heart rate broadcast within the vendor's app
  • Check for Conflicts: Close all other fitness apps that might be connected to your heart rate monitor, as most only allow one connection at a time
  • Power Cycle: Try power cycling the heart rate monitor (if possible) and restarting the Oura App

Live pace and distance is missing or wrong

  • Check Activity Type: Ensure you have selected a supported outdoor activity (Run, Walk, Hike, Cycle)
  • Check Location/GPS: Verify that your phone's GPS is working and that the Oura App has the necessary location permissions.
