How Oura Protects Your Data

At Oura, protecting your personal data is a task we take seriously. Our products are designed to help you to track important aspects of your health like your daily habits, reproductive health, and the quality of your sleep – we understand that data does not get much more personal than this. We may process personal data regarding your use of our products to protect your privacy. This may involve the use of privacy-enhancing technologies and other privacy-protective techniques like aggregation, de-identification, or anonymization. When information is aggregated or anonymized, it is no longer considered personal data.

When we generate data stories about Oura Ring members, this personal data is aggregated or otherwise processed to protect user privacy. For example, we may process insights like average Sleep Score by group, where each group typically contains thousands of users or more. If a group is too small to preserve anonymity, we do not include the group as a statistic.

App Lock

App Lock adds an extra layer of privacy to your health data by requiring biometric authentication (such as Face ID or Touch ID) before you can access the Oura App after it’s been in the background. This feature is not turned on by default.

When enabled, you’ll need to authenticate using your device’s biometrics (or your PIN/passcode, if biometrics aren’t available) after the time interval you’ve set.

Your ring and app will continue to sync as usual in the background. App Lock only prevents someone else from viewing your data if they access your phone.

Note: App Lock will only appear if your device has biometric security enabled. Check your device’s security settings first.

All biometric authentication is handled by your device's operating system. Oura never receives or stores your biometric data.

To turn on App Lock:

  1. Tap the menu  in the upper-left corner of the Oura App
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Under Security & Privacy, tap App Lock
  4. Toggle Enable App Lock on
    • Under Authenticate to open, choose when you’d like authentication to be required:
    • Immediately (as soon as you switch away from the app)
    • After 10 second
    • After 1 minute
    • After 5 minutes

You can turn off App Lock anytime by returning to the Settings menu and toggling it off.

Oura App and Ring Data

Your Oura Ring detects certain physiological metrics, such as heart rate, average body temperature, and movement. Your ring then syncs this data with your Oura App via Bluetooth. All your Oura App data is connected to your Oura account, which you created when first setting up your ring. The Oura App periodically syncs your data with Oura on the Web to ensure your app insights are preserved in case your ring is lost, stolen, or you decide to upgrade. We recommend saving your data under a single Oura account so you can switch rings and devices without ever losing your data.
