Hardware
The Gen3 ring was available in Horizon and Heritage models, with Black, Brushed Titanium, Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, or Stealth (matte black) finishes.
Generation 3 hardware included:
- Green and red LEDs, in addition to infrared (IR) LEDs. This allowed measurements of daytime and activity heart rates
- Extra negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensor. This enabled Cycle Insights and improved illness detection
- An extra IR sensor, which helped the algorithm detect and compensate for when the ring was not optimally aligned
- Accelerometers, to detect daily activity, steps, and common workout types
- USB charger with color-coded LEDs for improved charging status displays
- Titanium with physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating in Gold, Silver, Rose Gold, and Brushed Titanium
- Titanium with Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coating in Black and Stealth
- Non-allergenic, non-metallic seamless inner molding. This was a medical grade, BPA-free inner surface

The Gen1 ring was available in one model — in Stealth Black, Arctic White, or Mirror Black colors — and could be used to monitor sleep and daily activity.
Gen1 hardware and sensors included:
- Infrared (IR) LEDs, for nighttime biosignals and sleep stages detection
- 3D accelerometers, for daily activity and nighttime movement detection
- Temperature sensor, for nighttime skin temperature differences
- Made of Zirconia (ZrO2), with a medical grade, 100% non-allergenic, nickel free, and non-metallic inside molding
- USB connected charger with white LED
Software
Oura used these physiological data signals to calculate deep sleep, light sleep, REM sleep, and awake states. This information, together with your daytime activity data, indicated your recovery and readiness for the next day.
