Oura's NBA Partnership FAQ

Why are the NBA and Oura partnering?

The NBA is partnering with Oura to ensure that the health and safety of the players and staff remain the number one priority in the league’s return to play.

With the NBA’s many high profile players and personnel, accuracy regarding health information is business-critical, and Oura responds to the timely need of bringing players and league staff peace of mind as they head to Orlando next month. Drawing on significant advancements made in research, and its long-standing Oura Teams product, Oura has developed a Health Risk Management (HRM) platform designed to monitor potential illness risk in workforce populations.

Oura’s role is to help the League and Players Association make informed decisions for a safe return to play—it is a supplement to medical testing, not a replacement. With Oura, the NBA and NBPA are equipped with an efficient and accurate way of learning more about who may be in a higher risk category.

Is the Health Risk Management Platform voluntary for NBA players?

Yes, participation in Oura’s Health Risk Management Platform is completely voluntary. To protect the privacy of participants, HRM is designed to be an opt-in only platform that transparently communicates what categories of personal data may be shared with authorized NBA and NBPA personnel, as well as how that data will be used. Players and team personnel can ask to be removed from the program at any time.

How is illness risk calculated?

Illness risk is determined using factors such as meaningful changes in a user’s baseline body temperature, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability which may indicate if an individual is experiencing symptoms correlated with illness.

Is the Health Risk Management platform available to all Oura users?

The Health Risk Management (HRM) platform, together with Oura Teams, are beta enterprise products that are designed to monitor illness risk in workforce populations. The product is only available for organizations and their workforces at this time.

While the HRM platform is only available for organizations, the Oura Ring and app can be used to monitor your health trends. To read more about tracking illness and symptoms using Oura, check out this article.

What other organizations are Oura partnering with?
