How Does Oura Measure Respiratory Rate?

Oura tracks the number of breaths you take per minute while you sleep. To do so, Oura samples photoplethysmograms (PPG) over the course of the night and gauges blood volume changes to derive your respiratory rate.

Oura then provides you with an average nocturnal respiratory rate each morning. A typical respiratory rate for a healthy adult at rest is 12–20 breaths per minute.
